The global community of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is mourning the sudden and tragic passing of Elder W. Mark Bassett, a beloved General Authority Seventy who died Monday following a traumatic accident in St. George.

According to family members, Elder Bassett suffered a fatal traumatic brain injury after reportedly falling and striking his head on a stone. Emergency medical personnel and law enforcement agencies responded to the scene, where he was found with a fractured skull and severe brain bleeding. He was pronounced dead at the scene.

Church leaders later confirmed the heartbreaking news in an official statement shared through the Church Newsroom.

“We are deeply saddened at the sudden passing of Elder W. Mark Bassett, a General Authority Seventy who had been serving since April of 2016,” the statement read. “Elder Bassett passed away on May 11, 2026, as a result of a traumatic brain injury. He was with his family in St. George, Utah, when the incident occurred.”

At the time of his passing, Elder Bassett was serving as Executive Director of the Church’s Missionary Department, overseeing worldwide missionary efforts during a period of historic missionary growth and record numbers of individuals choosing to serve missions across the globe.

Church leaders and members alike have described him as a devoted servant of faith whose influence reached countless lives through his leadership, compassion, and testimony of Jesus Christ.

Just days before his death, Elder Bassett spoke during a devotional at the Missionary Training Center in Provo, where he encouraged missionaries to continue inviting others to faith and hope.

“Invite everyone to come—and do everything you can to help them enter this beautiful gate, which leads to eternal life,” he told missionaries during the gathering.

Many members of the church have since reflected on those words as a final expression of the faith and dedication that defined his life.

Tributes and messages of condolences have poured in from church members and religious leaders around the world.

“Elder Bassett radiated kindness and humility,” one member wrote. “He devoted his life to serving others and strengthening faith.”

Another tribute read, “His testimony touched countless lives. He will be remembered as a faithful disciple and compassionate leader.”

Church officials stated that Elder Bassett will be “deeply missed and always remembered for his great faith and dedicated service to the Lord Jesus Christ.”

He is survived by his wife, Angela, their children, grandchildren, and extended family.
